Varanasi, Oct 29 (IANS) Twenty-nine persons were arrested in connection with the attack on a police team that raided the Hansos village in Varanasi on Monday night to arrest two criminals.

A police team from Jaunpur crime branch had gone to the village on Monday night to arrest two alleged criminals, Rahul and Rajan, in a case of murder and loot.

A sub-inspector and a constable, who were on a motorcycle, were stopped and beaten up by villagers, reports said.

On receiving information, the local police rushed to the spot but were pelted with stones.

Inspector of Rohaniya police station, Parshuram Tripathi, and two constables were injured, reports said.

On Tuesday, 29 villagers were arrested in this connection and nearly 27 have been detained for questioning for their alleged role in the attack.
