4/9/1756Ali Bardi Khan of Bengal passed away in Murshidabad. His youngest daughter's son Siraj-ud-Daulah was crowned as King of Bengal when he was merely 20 years old after the death of King Tartar.
8/15/1947The Defence department becomes the Ministry of Defence under a Cabinet Minister. Each service was placed under its own Commander-in-Chief. Under the Constitution, the supreme command of the Armed Forces was vested with the President.
2/8/1999Gen. K. Sundarji (69), former Chief of Army Staff, died in New Delhi.
11/28/1967Pandurang Mahadev Bapat ""Senapati Bapat"", revolutionary and social reformer, passed away at the age of 89. He led the famous ""Mulshi Satyagraha"" and played a significant role in the struggle for Samyukta Maharashtra and took part in Goa liberation movement.

5/9/1981Durga Bai Deshmukh passed away at Hyderabad. She was a social reformer, freedom fighter, planner, administrator, educationist and parliamentarian. She worked for peace, social welfare and for betterment of the downtrodden.
1/4/1948Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country. Apart from the Burmese, the main ethnic minority groups are the Karen, Shan, Mon, Chin, and Kachin. Just as the Burmese did against the British, almost all of these ethnic groups have struggled against the Burmese government for self-determination.
