The Congress started its work of framing the Indian Constitution. Muslim League boycott failed to prevent Constituent Assembly opening. From 16th August 1946, the country witnessed communal riots on an unprecedented scale. At this crucial juncture, on 20th February 1947, Clement Atlee the British prime minister, fixed June 1948 as a deadline for transfer of power and Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the new Viceroy. |

| 10/20/1962 | China mounted a massive attacked in N.E.E.F.A. and Ladakh borders. Chinese army pushed Indians back. The real test of IAF airlift capability came when open warfare erupted on the Sino-lndian border, while operating to the tricky helipads in the mountains, including the operation of C-119Gs from airstrips 17,000 ft (5180m) above sea level in the Karakoram Himalayas, and the air-lifting by An-12Bs of two troops of AMX-13 light tanks to Chushul in Ladakh, where the small airstrip was 15,000 ft (4570m) above sea level. |

| 4/4/1905 | More than 10,000 people are feared to have perished in an earthquake that hit the northeast Indian province of Lahore during the night. The town of Dharmsala was almost completely razed to the ground with the entire population rendered homeless and sleeping out in icy conditions. Five hundred Gurkha soldiers were buried alive when their stonebuilt barracks collapsed on them. The towns of Kangra and Palampur have also been leveled to the ground by the worst natural disaster measured at 8 on Ricter Scale. In Lahore, 70 Hindus were killed, Muslim inhabitants were parading in the streets, weeping and offering up prayers with ceremonial rites. Several British administrators and missionaries were known to have been killed or injured. At Simla, Lady Curzon, wife of the Viceroy, had a close escape from death when a chimney crashed into the room in which she was sleeping. |
