1/2/1947Mahatma Gandhi met Lord Bevin, the personal emissary of British Prime Minister Winston Churchil, in Delhi. Beven is reported to have told the great man, ''Eighteen languages, 500 dialects, some 30 religions, a million Gods and Goddesses, 300 million individuals, an infinity of castes and sub castes, and a population (that is) practically illiterate and half of which (are) beggars or thieves... Good luck, sir! Such a nation is ungovernable! It'd take you centuries to get anywhere!''. Gandhiji wrapped his large, white shawl a little more closely around him, and modestly replied, 'India has eternity before her.. and ""All around me is utter darkness"".
3/21/1976The Indian people have delivered a stinging rebuke to the woman who had ruled them without the benefit of a constitution for the past 19 months by dumping her from office in a landslide election. After 11 years of rule, Indira Gandhi has resigned, and in an uncharacteristically humble statement said she ""accepted the verdict unreservedly"" and promised ""constructive cooperation"" with the new government. The heads of the victorious parties immediately dropped the year-and-a-half-old state of emergency, freed political prisoners, and began negotiations over who would head the new government.

4/5/1908Babu Jagjivan Ram, valiant freedom fighter, was born in Chandwa village in Bhojpur, Bihar. He held many prominent ministerial portfolios such as Communications Minister (1952-56), Railway Minister (1956-62), Food and Agriculture Minister (1967-70) and Defence Minister (1970-74). After 1977, he became the Deputy Prime Minister (Defence) in Janta regime. Thereafter, he established Congress (J). His uninterrupted representation in the Parliament from 1936 to 1986 is a world record. This day is commemorated as ""Samta Diwas"".
