Prof. Amartya Sen was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for Economics. He became the sixth Indian, by birth or citizenship, to win a Nobel.

11/9/1948Administration of Mayurbhanj State taken over by the Government of India.
8/15/1947The Defence department becomes the Ministry of Defence under a Cabinet Minister. Each service was placed under its own Commander-in-Chief. Under the Constitution, the supreme command of the Armed Forces was vested with the President.
7/13/1905Gandhiji opposes Bengal Partition, supports boycott of British goods. During Gokhale Lajpat Rai's deputation to Britain, he appeals to Colonial statesmen to treat India ""an integral part of the Empire"" with consideration. Sanjeevan, weekly from Calcutta, also raised the motto to boycott British Goods.
2/20/1985Bhawani Prasad Mishra, progressive Hindi poet, passed away. His most famous poem is ""Main Geet Bechtaa Hun"".
9/30/1989INS Shalki, India's first indigenously built submarine, launched in Bombay.
6/3/1895Kavalam Madhava Panikkar, historian and Indian diplomat (Asia & Western Dominance), was born.
3/28/1943S. Satyamurti, social reformer, politician and member of legislative council at Madras, died. He was born in Tirumayyam village in August 19, 1887.
12/4/1661Murad Baksh was executed on the charge of murdering Diwan Ali Nagi.
